Anyone know why this may be? My PC freezes to the point that not even the power switch functions. This happens right after the GNOME Panel is loaded and before the desktop appears. I am quite new to this. I installed Redhat 7.2. I am able to get into KDE. I was able to get into GNOME once. I am thinking this may be a problem of my old processor. It is a CEL 300A OCD to 450. This was my old processor for WIN2k until I upgraded. Do you guys think that the processor might be the problem? I have tried to disconnect every peripheral and still the same problem. I appreciate any and all responses. Thanks.

Sure its hard locked, that would most likely be a hardware problem.. LINUX does NOT HARDLOCK... I have been using it since 1992 and it has never hardlocked on me... kernel dump, a few times, but not hard lock like windows???

Try switching to a different virtual console using CTRL+ALT+F1 thru F6.. and see if you get a login screen..

Try killing Xwindows by doing a CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and see if it doesnt refresh.

Also try to telnet/ssh into the box from another (if you have another machine nearby). If you can then do a 'shutdown -r' to restart so that you don't end up corrupting your filesystem (ext2 is pretty fragile; the journaling fs's are pretty tough to take down).
