Linux Gurus...........................HELP!

OK, I am a "newbie" at this Mandrake Linux 7.2, want to learn it though to expand myself and explore alternatives. Anyhoo, I bought this full 4 CD copy (2 instal disks & 2 Disks of Progs. & games) from a store in town. The guy said this would be one of the easiest to begin with, he said it will configure all your hardware etc. during install! So, I bought it! Install was slick and painless.....then I launch.........nothing is configured except my video card, sound card, & keyboard! I think, no problem, I read and find the control panel......nothing there, no CD-ROM's, No Floppy, nothing! I have an Abit KT7-RAID board.......does that have something to do with this? I've tried mounting the modem, floppy, and cd-rom to no avail, it also says it can not find my disks (hd's I suppose), but, it runs! I've read all I can read and frankly the manual offers little help! What am I doing wrong?

#1 with the newest version of mandrake it uses automounter...

therfore your floppy is already mounted at boot up. so you ahve to cd /mnt/floppy and your in the directory.

of course u need a floppy in teh drive though 😉

#2 same goes with cdrom

#3 can't mount the modem

#4 you can use DrakConf to run the hardware probing utility again if you wanted.

#5 see my signature and visit my webpage.

hey, Thanx! I actually checked out your site before I even bought! Now, about the modem, I have run the utility and it won't locate it! I have two actually, a USR PCI 56K and a USR USB 56K......it finds neither, and that brings up another point......it finds none of my USB hardware......printer, scanner, etc.. The guy I bought it from said he used mandrake 7.2 and it found all his USB stuff! Wow, gotta be something weird going on IMHO!

And it can happen that those modems are just plain winmodems and don't work under linux at all,
you'll have to check around a bit....

You should also read a bit about the linux filesystem so that you have knowledge of where things
are on a installed system.....

Have fun...
