Why do you want to switch to linux?
Obviously you have had some thoughts about linux, and think that linux can do something for you
that Windows cannot.
Its not Windows though. So if you want linux to be Windows you have the wrong product.
That always bothers me, when people say that. If you want a product that behaves like
Windows you probably want Windows, not linux.
That said, If you play alot of games, Linux just isn't there yet. Not enough companies that
make video games, make them for linux. And though you can get some Windows games
working through programs like wine, alot of the times it not worth the hassle.
However if all you do is read email and browse the internet, then you probably can get by
with Linux. And its free. Nothing like paying for a Windows license to just do that.
You can pick up linux distributions online, or its usually easy to find them on
www.linuxiso.org.
Personally I like Redhat, and have had no issues to date with Fedora. Then again, I have been using Redhat
since 4.2. To each their own. Some people like Redhat, some Mandrake and yet others prefer Gentoo, Debian,
Slackware, or SUSE (there are others, I just named a few). Great thing about linux is that you can download
these ISOs and burn them to CD and test which one you like the best. Everyone feels comfortable with something.
Another think about Linux, you can tinker. Some people like to tinker with things. Well linux is great for that. Out of the
box, you can usually just leave it alone, however you can also tinker with this or tinker with that. If you generally like to
do something like this, you will like linux.
There are tons of reasons to use linux. However what do you use your computer for? Thats what you have to ask yourself.
And if you ask in general I do this? Is linux a good switch, people will tell you.
And as TommyVercetti said, you can make it a dual boot system. Most linux distributions can easily setup a dual boot system for you.
That way you can go back to XP if you need. I have been using linux for a long time, however I still have to use 2000 every so often.
