Linux/ftp/network: slow ftp LAN connection weirdness

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone might have an idea about the following problem that a friend of mine is having. Many thanks in advance for any insights......🙂

"I have had something funny start. When I ftp to my linux box that does the stats I can't connect to the machine. If I telnet there I takes a while to connect. This just started yesterday.

If I ftp to the ftp server from the same machine to "localhost" it works fine and connects right away. If I try to ftp to the machine's ip address it takes several minutes to connect.

I feel that it is a dns problem because I can see access to my dsl modem when I ftp to the machine on the lan like it is trying to resolve the address.

Any ideas about this? The machine has been running fine for a year or so... this just started."

Sounds like DNS. If the machine is only a server remove the dns servers from the resolv.conf file or add a line in /etc/hosts for his machine and try again.

Many thanks for the suggestion/insight 🙂 I've passed it along and will follow-up here with the outcome. Thanks again!
