Linux friendly modems

I have been trying to find info about modems that are reliable under Linux. I know you are supposed to get a modem that has a hardware based controller and the firmware is flash upgradable, but some PCI modems still require Windows to install and run. I also went to the Redhat site for a list of hardware that is compatible with the OS, they said that almost all modems except for winmodems and a small list are compatible. Based on what I heard and read, this is not entirely true. Could someone please point me in the direction of some unbiased reliable information and recommendations.

Thanks

Try doing a search on these forums - this has been the topic of several giant flame wars, probably 50,000 words written about this topic on these boards.

In my opinion get an external (NOT USB) modem and you will be fine. But I am not about to say that is the only way to do it, but it's probably the easiest way.
