Linux framebuffer console not working

I'm trying to get a high res console. Hardware is a serverworks dual P3 board with an ATI Rage XL 4MB built in.

I have tried vga=775 and vga=795 and video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x314 and various combinations. This results in a blank screen and sometimes a message from the monitor that it is not being given the 'optimum signal'...

Anyone know why this is happening? I swear it didn't used to be this difficult.
 
OK, I recompiled with some new options, and now I have penguins on boot. The vga=xyz still seems not to be working however.
