Linux for an old machine

I've got an old(ish) machine (Pentium 3 400Mhz, 128MB RAM) lying around and am thinking of installing Linux on it to try it out. Is Ubuntu Linux going to be OK on a system like that, and if not can anyone suggest a more suitable distro (assuming (correctly) that I'm a newbie).

Also, I'm going to need to get myself a wireless card (preferably USB) to connect to the internet for this machine, are there any makes you'd advise against/advise to go for in terms of linux compatibility (I'd heard wireless cards were some of the less supported pieces of hardware with Linux).

Any other random advice would be appreciated too.

Thanks

Try searching the forums first. The 'which distro' question gets done at least once a day and I've seen recent threads about usb wireless cards as well.

you know when i was a newbie, i started with slack..its kinda like picking a tall hard mountian as your first hill to climb instead of the easy one...youll learn faster, learn more and in general in the end youll be more satisfied. it seems like most comercial distros happen to have alot of bloat in them though ive never tried ubuntu yet... personially id go slack with flux-box as my window manager but thats just me its a nice streamlined low footprint wiondow manager(desktop) kde and gnome are memory hogs.

Any distro will work, however the larger desktop environments will be sluggish. If you need to have a gui, use icewm, fluxbox, blackbox or some other minimal window manager.

Get Fluxbox/Blackbox on it for sure....Very minimal footprint and still looks nice 😉 Obviously not as ncie as pimped out KDE/Gnome, but people often forget the beauty of simplicity 😉

Maybe something like Damn Small Linux 😉 Although I would favor some kind of ubuntu distro that was made with the philosophy of a minimal footprint

There's a howto guide over on the Ubuntu Forums that discusses a minimal (server) installation of Ubuntu and adding only the packages/managers you want. The performance should be pretty good using this method with a lighter DM.
