Hey all,

I am looking to build a Firewall/Router for home use. I have already figured out LInux would be the way to go, but...
Which one?

I will be attempting to put it on a Pentium 60 with 64 megs of ram and a small hard drive.

I would like something very, or at least learnable in a short time, easy and simple to configure.
I know it is alot to request or suggest, but any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob:cool:

I second smoothwall. It is very easy to get running on the hardware you have. We have it running on some old 486/66 machines herre at work. You only need about 40MB of harddrive space.

I would also suggest that after installing, you read slowly through the manuals. They are actually pretty infomative.

The main claim to fame here is the graphical interface. Very user friendly.

I suggest Freesco.

Quite possibly the best Linux based firewall/router out there. So simple even I can configure it!

pics?;)

seriously, does anyone have pictures of the interfaces...? I WAS going to use smoothwall, but everyone keeps recommending other things...

I have cable with a dynamic ip....so I do NOT need PPPoE support

Smoothwall still seems nice, but I have never acutally "seen" it with my own eyes...

anyone?

I am setting it up this weekend so expedited reponses will be appreciated

Freesco is good...but I like the flashy interface and remote access(a MUST) of smoothwall..

Thanks peeps for this informative, yet lonely conversation

I'm not sure about Freesco, but I added SSH for remote access to linux router project almost 2 years ago. If freesco has the same package setup that LRP has, I can't imagine them not having a version with openssh installed.

I do like the smoothwall interface, but it does run sort of slow on 486 and lesser hardware. It would be very nice to have it run from a compact flash. I don't like the idea of harddrives in my routers, although that is what we're doing with smoothwall at work. We have 2 old 486/66 machines that are setup identical to each other with smoothwall. That way if one dies, we just fire up the other one.

edit: this post is mainly to break up goosemaster's string of posts.

I'd say SmoothWall again.

Look, its FREE for the GPL version, so give it s try - you wont lose anything, only a couple of hours at MOST! :)

I recommend BBIagent

Super easy to install, easy to manage (web based interface), rock-hard secure and runs on a floppy.

I have attempted freesco before, but I am also on a dynamic cable IP .. freesco didn't have a DHCP client .. maybe it does now??
I'm gonna check out this smoothwall thingy too .. looks interesting..

another one to take a look at is coyote linux, router on a floppy, no hard drive needed.

Freesco can use DHCP, and also you can use a web browser, telnet, or ssh to remote access it. Mine is running on a 486/66 for 2 years now.

I've been using BBIagent for about a month or so now, works great, easy to set up ,remote access and admin.
Plenty of features for a router/firewall that runs on a floppy. Give it a try.

WOW,
Thanks for the info all. Not decided yet, so I will probably try all the above, but freesco and smothie sound and look pretty good.

Thanks again,
