I want to setup a Linux File server to store my images of PCs. I have a Windows 2000 Prof W/S that I want to be able to acess these images. The FTP Connection/Server setup is easy, but how would I go about setting up a share on the linux server so that the 2000 machine can map that drive easily. Is SAMBA required for this?

There is also a samba howto and other resources, but if the smb.conf file that came with his distro is well commented enough (i.e. like mandrakes) then it could be easily edited by hand. Webmin and Swat are also good for managing samba.

Depending on how you install it (from source, pkgsrc, ports, apt, etc.), it may be slightly different. This screwed me up, because when I installed from pkgsrc in NetBSD SAMBA was rather easy to configure, but when I installed from apt in Debian earlier today, things were different, and I still haven't got it set up quite to my liking.

Samba is Samba is Samba, unless you're running Debian sid which has CVS builds of samba currently and even then 95% of it is the same from the smb.conf/configuration side of it.

Nothinmans right. No matter what linux distro I tried samba was always the first thing that I got running (in some cases it was actually the only thing :D).

I still haven't tried NetBSD (the allure of apt was just too great to resist), but I'm sure that their weren't to many differences between the configs. As a matter of fact whenever I switch *Nix OSs I usually keep my original samba config file. I still haven't run into a situation when it took any more than a couple of changes to get it working.

Edit: Grammar

Well, that means it's probably just me (i.e. that I forgot how my config was set up). Should have just backed up the damn smb.conf file.

The Shank: 1. YES SAMBA is what you want for windows filesharing connectivity
2. Make sure you install SWAT along side of SAMBA, as it is a web based administration tool
for SAMBA, it makes setting up windows shares sooo easy.
3. Samba RULES
