Linux distro with least amount of "out of the box" problems

Is it still Ubuntu?

What are my options in the year 2013? I want to basically install the distro, and be able to use it right away (for Folding purposes, if it matters).

Also: which distro that meets the "mostly works out of the box" criteria also requires the least amount of RAM? I only have 1GB of RAM on the machines I'm going to be installing Linux on...

I've used http://peppermintos.com/ on a 1.6ghz Sempron w/ 768MB of ram before with good results. It's basically a stripped down version Ubuntu. One thing to consider was getting the wireless card drivers to install properly. What's the make and model number of the computer? The more details we have the better suggestions we can give.

if its the CPU and ram I sent you ubuntu ran great and you only need to install jre, flash, and wine.

I also like mint with cinnimmon which is a derivitive of ubuntu.

Peppermint was mentioned above. That would be good if you're just folding cause it comes with very few applications by default. For something more fully featured, Lubuntu or Xubuntu would be better. For a kitchen sink distro, Mint, Kubuntu, or Ubuntu would be ok.

It depends on what you will do with it.

Debian is far more stable than ubuntu.

I've had issues with network media streaming on mint-15 (based on ubuntu).

But if you do need the desktop stuff, like blutooth support, and more desktop friendly, then ubuntu/mint it is.
