During the last month i tried the four major desktops. All the info that i know about them comes from wiki - comparison of x-window system desktops. I have runned mint kde (tower) which i liked but my system is slow for kde desktops. I will try on debian and ubuntu for the fun of it.
Gnome is easy to use and has many features. I am using ubuntu (tower) for a month now and debian (laptop) since yesterday. And i am very impressed with it.
I find xfce a lot like gnome and capable to run on lower resources. I tried xubuntu on the laptop and i liked very much but has failed me twice on two restarts. It wouldn't load at all, not even in rescue mode. I did not try a third time.
And going down the ladder is lxde. I runned lubuntu for a week on the laptop. I believe i could fine tune it and it could end up to be a good os. I removed it because the laptop could easily run xfce and can even run gnome.
I think i will have xfce on the laptop finally and this is based on the amount of memory i have on the laptop. Which brings me to a question. What is the real difference between gnome and xfce?
Kde, fully loaded beast, hard to use, that version at least. Needed too many clicks for one thing.
Gnome, there is not much to say...it can do almost anything on a low end machine.
Xfce, gnomes' little brother.
Lxde, a promising youngster.
When comparing them i also think that they are like a series of windows oss. Like a win98, win2000, winxp, winvista.
