My desktop in Red Hat is bigger than my screen, I have to do this funny scrolling thing, I can only see part of the desktop at a time, then I can scroll over with my mouse, how can I disable this, and have it shrink everything to fit.

Does Red Hat have a overall screen zoom level adjustment? It it does try reducing the zoom level until it fills your screen correctly.

huh? ;) Newbie here. I think I know what you are talking about, would it be something I put in my XF86Config-4 file?

You can change video modes on-the-fly with Ctrl-Alt-+(plus) and Ctr-Alt--(minus). Look your X conf file, under section "screen" subsection "display". There's a line "Modes" with listing of various resolutions. If you delete others than the one you want ("1024x768" for example), virtual screen dissapears. Don't forgot to restart X after editing it's conf file :)

I know how to do that, but like when I go bigger I just have to scroll farther! Its like my display is 1600x1200, but I only see 800x600 at a time. When I drag my mouse to the side of the screen it moves for me.

He's talking about the virtual screen. No matter what resolution he chooses, it's still going to extend beyond the display. One reason I didn't like the early Linux's, with exception of Caldera. There must be a way to disable it, but I never figured it out. I'm guessing you're using 6.1 or older?

I think the way I got rid of it was messing with the resolutions and whatnot. I dont think I ever figured out how I did it exactly... You could always try using a decent version of that distro. :)

I had to edit it myself for the nVidia drivers. I can't post it, I can only get on the internet in Windows due to my gay cable modem which is hooked up by USB (the moron installer couldn't get ethernet card enabled in w2k, I was of course at school)

Yes I know he is talking about virtual desktop. That is what will happen when you have a desktop bigger than your resolution. Say your desktop is 1280*1024 and your resolution is 1024*768, the virtual desktop will be on. ............

I just use my max enabled resolution. You may have to manually list specific modes in your "Modes" line, else XFree86 will try to autodetect all the resolutions your monitor supports. In either case, XFree86 typically tries to make your virtual screen size equal to the max available resolution.

I've never played with nvidia drivers... but if you post your xf86config file either I or someone else can tell U whats wrong with it. Just put it on your windows box (even a floppy works for this) and post it.
