Linux/chromium on USB

So I am trying to install another OS on a USB disk, Chromium or Linux. But from everything I have read, it looks like you have to format your usb disk first? Is there anyway to use the usb disk as storage and os-running?

Chromium is a browser, not an OS.

And IIRC the Ubuntu tool for creating a bootable USB installation gives you the option of formatting or not. As long as it's already FAT and has enough space it should just put what it needs on there without affecting the existing data.
