Linux Boot Question--Please help

Can you boot linux using lilo if your DVD is jumpered as master on the primary IDE with your hard drive as slave on the same? My Bookpc will only allow this confiuration for some reason. The DVD is not recognized if jumpered as slave.

Please advise.
