linux boot process: load kernel, then what?

This is a relatively low-level question... LILO loads the kernel into RAM. The kernel does some stuff, and then what? How does it know where to find whatever happens next? I assume an answer would be fairly long, so I'll take links if you don't want to copy/paste a page of stuff 🙂

I want to know all the way until the user calls a program at the shell.
