Linux boot fails at nvidia logo / bootsplash

Hey folks,

Installed a new eVGA 7900GTX, and initially had artifact-like problems, which have been FULLY solved after a variety of driver and BIOS clean-up procedures...but can't get into X under linux since BIOS upgrade!!

In short, installed 7900GTX - linux continued to work nicely. Had to tweak the xorg.conf file a bit, but got glx running on the linux box (Mandriva 2.6.12-17SMP kernel), and glxgears gave me about 21,000 FPS...a nice upgrade from the 7,800 FPS with the 6600GT. In any case, at this point, the machine was NOT stable under windows (!?), for running Oblivion. So, I upgraded the Windows 200 software drievrs etc, to no avail. I THEN upgraded the A8N32-SLI bios from 1009 to 1205...and PRESTO...the 7900GTX was suddenly working properly after nother vid driver install (now 91.28). At present, the CPU is overclocked to 2.5GHz, with the RAM running at 250MHz 2.5-3-3-7 1T timing. It is dual-Prime95 stable (12 hours, no errors), AND Memtest1.65+ stable (8 hours, no errors). Temperatures are fine around 40C.

BUT BUT BUT... I still can't get into a graphical environment under linux! If I choose default login, which usually starts the X server and eventually starts a Gnome session, it hangs at the nVidia logo. Hard reset required to get out of this.
I can get to a console however, via "Failsafe" from lilo. From here, I can switch from usermode to runlevel 3 (#init 3), which proceeds without error. If I launch the X server (#startx), I get another hang at the nVidia bootsplash logo. I successfully re-compiled and re-installed the latest (8762) nVidia drivers from the console, but this did not change the bahaviour at boot-time.

At this point, I'm looking for help - any posters, please tell me which log files you want to see, and I'll post them.

Cheers,
Adrian
