Linux audio server: Any sound cards with digital out (S/PDIF) supported in Linux?

I've got this P166MMX Dell staring me in the face, pleading to be a Linux based audio server. 🙂 I'm interested in any ideas on the project.

Dell Dimension XPS P166c - $25
-Pentium 166MMX
-72MB RAM (FPM, I think)
-S3 ViRGE PCI video
-3Com 10/100Mb PCI NIC
-Floppy
-Creative SoundBlaster PCI
Western Digital WD450AA 45GB 5400RPM - $45
-In removeable caddy just because

I figure that I've got enough here to run a decent Linux-based audio server. At least I hope this is enough.

I'd like the capability to remotely play tracks through the server's own sound card or stream them to my local machine.

Is a P166MMX enough to run Linux, playing VBR MP3s, in this fashion without an X display (it will prolly be headless anyway)?

Are there any S/PDIF-out cards already supported by Linux? The current sound card does not have digital-out. My stereo receiver can handle digital-in via an RCA connector (I've connected a sound card via S/PDIF mini-jack-to-RCA in the past).

I'd like to run the Linux distro (don't know which one yet) completely from floppy, if possible. Some simple networking (telnet/FTP), mebbe accessing playlists via HTTP, and the choice of streaming audio back to client or playing on the server's sound card. Possible? Any application suggestions? ShoutCAST? What is your favorite command-line MP3 player?

For now, everything will be running on an isolated LAN, so I'm not concerned with being hacked from the outside or anything.

Many are supported such as the The SBLIVE! S/PDIF...the SIS 7012 based cards S/PDIF is also supported.. as well as Intel 810/815/820/845 based S/PDIF out...and CMedia CM8738 S/PDIF is also supported..

Some are only supported if you buy the commercial (cheap) Open Sound System sound support from 4Front Technologies..

You can find more info at 4Fronts web site...

There is info on using the SPDIF in/out on the SBLIVE on the Linux SBLIVE! Homepage:

There are some excellent WEB based jukebox systems that work with MP3's played via shoutcast or direct out on freshmeat... do a search for jukebox, thats the way I would go:
