Linux and Windows XP (not dual-boot)

This is not a question/discussion on dual booting the two, but how to set up networking between a machine with Linux and a machine(s) with XP. I built this morning a computer (didnt take long to put the floppy in 🙂), with an AMD k6-2 400 on FIC PA-2013, 128MB, 32MB TNT2, and 20 GB hard drive. I currently running Mandrake 8.1 with a minimal basic install, my linuxbox (LB for short). On my XPbox (XP for short), I have Athlon 600 on Tyan s2380, 655MB, 64MB Kryo2, 40GB harddrive, SB live 5.1, Netgear FA310TX. I know that I need at least 2 NICs for the Linux box, should I get two Netgear FA310txs or get another brand. If the latter, what brand of NICs should I get (not too expensive)? My setup here at college is a T1 line that is shared by over a thousand people and I am not sure if they have any block on allowing more than one computer in your dorm with a t1 connection. If they dont, I will need to run the main cable into the LB and then another cable from the LB to XP. But I am sure that there is something that I need to install/configure in Linux and XP in order for them to communicate and for the LB to host the XP. I want to do this because I want the experience. So, what I need to know if how to do all the configurations? Also, I need to know if I should bother trying to OC the K6-2 400? So if someone out there knows what they are doing in this area, LMK. Or even if I should get another distribution of Linux? Thanks for your help.

If you are trying to setup the linux box as a NAT/firewall/router, check out iptables. ipmasq is what you will really be looking at there.
