Linux and video card drivers

Is it hard to install nVIDIA graphics card drivers on Linux. I'm building a new computer and it's going to have a 6600GT/6800 in it and I was just wondering if it is a real PITA to install the drivers on fedora/debian?

The instructions appear to be pretty good.

You may want to check, sometimes nvidia's propriatory drivers don't have support for the very newest cards. The last driver release was nov. 5 and it added support for the 6600/6600gt and Quadro FX 4000 SDI

But you shouldn't be buying the latest and the greatest anyways. WAY too expensive. Wait a couple months and buy 2 for the price of one.

before tryin a distro i go to their support sites and look up the forum for vid card support and there are always like 50+ threads on how no one can get ATI drivers to work correctly

That's because ATI's driver writers are a bunch of tools.

Should be pretty straightforward. Just make sure you have proper kernel sources installed if you don't have a common distribution kernel.

Nvidia also has a Forum if you run into trouble:

I never had any problems, in fact I am amazed how well and reliable they work and how flexible the wrapper is. The only major broken thing I have seen so far was 2.6.9 Linux/kernel.org and the NVidia release at the time. Fixed by now.
