Linux and Soundcards

Okay, I'm trying to setup a linux box and I am having a problem getting the soundcard setup and working.

My setup:
ECS K7S5A mobo
Diamond MX300 (aureal)
Mandrake 8.1

I was trying to get sound to work thru the soundcard but I was not able to configure it. The sound configuration tool wouldn't work and I could not get sound to come thru (well mp3's anyway).
Then I tried to get it thru the on-board sound (all I want is to play mp3's and CD's, least for right now). But it doesn't even detect it. I had disabled it earlier and I thought I re-enabled but maybe not.

So any clues as for what to do? Anything special I need to do to get the MX300 to work? Or the on-board sound (including BIOS settings)?

Thanks.

The linux kernel does not have drivers for any aureal cards. You can download drivers from http://sourceforge.net/projects/aureal. The instructions for installing them are included. If you have any questions, there is a forum at that site, i was able to get all my questions answered by browsing that forum (they had all been asked and answered before).

Hope this helps 🙂

You should also be able to get OSS drivers for it for a ~$30 fee. Not too shabby really. But I never had any real problems with the aureal drivers they provided when I used Mandrake.
