Hi,

I just got my Audigy LS today, and I am finally able to have 5.1 in Linux ;). It took me a while to figure out how to get it to work, but it's finally working. While I was getting 5.1 surround sound in linux, a few questions came to my mind:
1. Is there a way to globaly specify for all apps to use 5.1 or at least more than 2 speakers?
2. What are good programs or other apps to test sound in linux (meaning that surround sound works fine and how to tune it)?
3. Can somebody provide me an easy manual on how to tell between the 15 or 20 slides in alsamixer (they are so confusing)?
4. What are good websites to learn more about linux and sound?

Thanks,

1. Don't know. I use a reciever that does pro logic2 which does that automaticly.
2. Don't know, I just used high some classical music.
3. No manual so much, although their is a user wiki for emu10k1 at alsa that may have something. Each card has slightly differen menus. It's based on the different features of each card.

Of the ones that aren't so self-describing PCM is for all the computerized sound, like from games or cdroms that are read thru the IDE stuff to make music instead of the analog cord. Surround is for the rear speakers, I beleive. Center is the channel for the center speakers, LFE is for the subwoofer channel (Low Frequency Effects), Wave is for wave music I guess.

Some of the sliders are worthless and are for features that were never used in the card. The the Optical lines are worthless since you have no optical inputs outputs. The module.conf options for emu10k1 control somewhat what features that alsa is made aware of: options snd-emu10k1 index=0 id="Emu10k1" extin=0x3fc3 extout=0x1fff

That's the extin and extout stuff. Don't forget that these drivers are for not only alsa, but all the different variations of the older 5.1 cards and the newer features for audigy2. See the wiki for that.

The spdif is for that miniplug spdif. That is for the digital out. IEC958 is the fancy name for spdif/digital in/out protocol (or something like that) and you'll see that with optical stuff.

The capture stuff is for recording. You can set the capture for a the cdrom slider (for the analog cdrom cord connection. Alsaplayer always plays cdroms thru the data buss which is higher quality) on and turn the capture volume up and the cdrom volume down and still hear the cdrom playing.

4. a good place
Towards the top and to the right of that page and you'll see links to others in a webring. Check them all out, from left to right :p, and you can get many hours of good research material. :)
