Linux and SETI

I have a machine that I want to put Linux on and run SETI for the TeAm.
What distro should I use for the best performance? This machine will be on 24/7
in a closet so it won't be doing anything but crunching. here is what it is:
Dual P3 500 slot 1
570MB Ram
Tyan Tiger 133 motherboard
Rage 128 2X AGP 16MB
10GB WD caviar
no-namer CD-ROM
What is the best way to run seti on linux? I don't know too much about linux but I am
not afraid of a CLI. Thanks!
 
Any distro should be fine. If you can navigate the installs, try Debian or Slackware. Debian is generally easier to keep up to date and whatnot. You won't need a GUI, so don't bother with X, unless you want to use the Windows version of SETI, which is a bit faster. If you want the Windows version you'll need WINE, which should be an easy install on Debian.

There is a program called something like slap-get for Slackware that works just like apt-get for Debian, so installing software and keeping it up to date is getting simpler.

But you can use pretty much anything. Mandrake is generally considered newbie-friendly, but I haven't used it in years. v10 is supposed to be kinda buggy. Fedora is decent, but also considered kinda buggy.

There is a thread or two on "Which distro for me?" in the OS forum, check them out. Real linux users sometimes post in them, and might be able to provide more/better advice than myself. 😛
