Linux and NT share SMB problem

OK I have Lycoris build 52 installed and when I try and access my NT server shares, I can get as far as seeing my shares through the network browser (ala My network Places) but when I click on of the shares I then get the dialogue that asks for username and password, which I enter then I get the error message:

"The process for the smb protocol died unexpectedly"

What does this mean and how can I fix it? i have allowed all on my firewall on the NT box so that isn't it. FWIW I have never been able to get to my NT shares from any distro of Linux and this is actually as far as I have gotten, to be able to actually see the shares but not access them.

You have matching user/pass accounts I take it? Domain name the same? Are you trying to mount as a user, or a 'root'? Are file permissions set correctly on the NT server? Are you using Winsock 1.1 or 2 on the NT server? (1.1 has caused problems)

The accounts are the same, Domains the same, and I am trying to mount as user, file permissions on my NT box are set OK. As far as Winsock versions I am not running proxy server so I don't know why that would matter, but FWIW I guess it is running the latest version of Winsock since it is a 2k Server running SP3.
