Linux and NT 4.0 domain

My boss is about ready to let me install linux on my work computer. However, he is a bit reluctant due to the fact that he doesn't know of any conflicts betweent the two. He wouldn't let anyone install win2k for the longest time, but I showed him it didn't hurt anything. Now, what I am wondering is, does it obtain an IP from the NT DHCP server? Can I log onto the server? Will I recieve logon scripts? Will I have access to network recources on an NTFS partition? And finally, do you see any problems with this scenario?

I'm pretty sure that you will need to install and configure Samba to make Linux and NT cooperate with sharing files and domains.

Also, I just now thought of something cool: you could set up an FTP server on the Linux machine and use something like Internet Neighborhood to map the FTP server to a virtual drive on the Windows NT machine... this way you can access and modify files on the drive, but Internet Neighborhood will actually make an FTP connection to the server, get the file, modify it, and store it back.
Very cool and transparent. (aside from the obvious network latency)

SAMBA should work just fine. Their documentation is pretty good too. And if you need help, do searches here and at ars for examples of smb.conf's. I found one that helped me figure out what I did wrong :p

But a linux box wont pose any threat to the server? We've had incidences where our wireless routers took over the DHCP server. Why he is somewhat reluctant to do this.

If anything, a Windows box poses a threat. A Linux machine, if configured and secured properly, will be very reliable and "loyal".

Not if setup correctly.

That is not reassuring.

A windows machine, if not setup correctly could become an attacking host, unknown to the owner, in seconds. If you set it up VERY wrong, you could have problems, just try and test it out when you will not be impacting too many other people. And again, read the docs, and look for more FM's and you should be ok :)
