I set up a Linux system to run as a file server and internet router, I have been going over the net all evening (much to the shagrin of my pregnant wife) and really haven't been able to find what I am looking for.

I currently have two computers (win XP and win 98) running off my DSL connection through a Netgear RT314 router.

Now I set this up with little knowledge of networking, because not much was needed.

I have set up small (3 or 4) networks (peer to peer) in the past using windows 98.

THe problem is while these served there purpose I accually learned VERY LITTLE ABOUT NETWORKING! Basically name the computers and workgroup map the drive and go. These were relitively easy and when I needed a push in the right direction I got it here or from my IT guy at work. Basically I did the job and while I got it to work I had very little understanding of why it worked. Of course now with this linux comp I have no clue.

Sub-net mask?
Primary DOMAIN?:Q

Basically I have gotten by with what amounts to luck, NOW I NEED HELP, If you know of sites that will help me understand this stuff please let me know I really want to do some hard core reading and get a backround of knowledge before I start asking specific questions again. Also any books that can be had for 30 bucks also might be a good place to start but I would like to start with web if that is possible.

Thanks in advance,

Books: O'Reilly's Running Linux for starters, move up to UNIX in a nutshell when you just need a quick reference later. Best source for all things tech has to be O'Reilly

Web: linuxdoc.org (too lazy for link) How-To's, faq's, etc

for commands, man <command>... if you need more than that, man man

Have fun ... Use the source Luke!
