So I decided to go with Slack 10.2 running the 2.6.13 kernel so I could have the goodies I need like support for my particular ITE 8212F IDE RAID CARD. I got everything setup and I must say I am very impressed with the performance of Linux+MythTV+XFCE4.x when compared to my old XP Pro+GBPVR system, so much so that I'm going to finally make the move over to Linux for good.
Anyway, I ran into some slight problems that I found a workaround for but would appreciate a better solution and need your help. When installing Slackware 10.2 I didn't choose to install KDE or the QT Package on Disc2. I just installed the base system, the required files, xfce, and some other things I thought I would need (including MYSQL and the .rc file for MythTV), and when it came time to ./configure and make MythTV I got a bunch of errors saying it couldn't find certain files. I worked around this by doing a full install, including all the KDE stuff, then tried ./configure and make again and it worked this time.
I don't want to have to install the kictchen sink in order to get the config I want working, so I'd appreciate it if you guys could tell me which slackware packages/where on the install discs I can find the following programs/files that MythTV install guide says are needed:
1. mysql, gcc, lame (I know I had these installed already),
2. freetype2-devel, XFree86-devel [I was able to find and install this but it wasn't enough... still got the compile errors], qt-devel (where do I find these?)
3. cdialog (required for lirc, where do I find this?)
4. Anything else I should install and where do I find it?
Thanks!

I'm still deciding on a distro (it's either going to be Slack, Debian, or Ubuntu) to use with MythTV and would like to know if there are any *good* step-by-step instructions for Linux/MythTV n00bs so they can get a working MythTV setup up and running within a day.
I saw some instructions some user put up on his website but was wondering if there are any other sources just in case those instructions skipped something important n00bs really need to know to get a successful install without screwing around for days troubleshooting.
My system is simple, Sempron 2800+ 64, 512MB PNY PC3200, 2 EIDE HD's (1x160mb, 1x200mb) connected to *ITE 8212F*-based IDE Controller Card, *WinTV PVR-500MCE*, PNY 6200 Vid Card, Envy24HT-S-Based Sound Card, and 2 Optical Disc Drives, all hooked up to an ASUS K8N Motherboard.
If anyone can point me to some good resources that will help prepare me for a smooth and successful installation of MythTV, I'd appreciate it. I'll probably most likely be using GNOME for my desktop.
Thanks in advance!
