Linux and mpeg

Will mpegs (or anything based off it) work on Linux, particularly ubuntu without any software (like Wine or Cedega)?

Or most TV tuners for that matter

I figure I should check before jumping into it.

Thanks

MPEG is a compression algorithm for video so any player that supports it will work. I play VCDs, DVDs and Xvid files regularly with mplayer and there's a VLC port for Linux if you like it better.

Tuners are another story, some work fine and some don't so you need to specify what you have in order to find out if it'll work or not.

You can boot Ubuntu with a LiveCD and see if it recognizes your tuner card.

I haven't run into anything that hasn't played in Ubuntu so far. Just have to have the codecs installed.

is there a site I can go to that would have a list of hardware that works?

Would the ubuntu site have it, or maybe distrowatch?

thanks

What are you trying to accomplish? Like Nothinman said Tuners are another story, they have nothing to do with each other.

Its really hard to say. There's no "huge" database of supported hardware under the linux kernel as far as I'm aware of (which is rather unfortunate... I'm actually contemplating starting a site that'll store supported hardware under linux). The closest I've seen is Phoronix's LCH although it does a bad job in how it lists supported hardware. It should not only list by manufacturer's models, but by the chipset in general as well. This site is an excellent example of how a site should list supported hardware under linux. Its used for knowing which wireless cards are supported.

As far as TV capture cards go, take a look at LinuxTV's supported hardware page. You'll see various chipsets that are supported and the lists in the links show the manufacturer's models. You might've heard about how well Hauppage cards perform under linux and how popular they are for the linux HTPC crowd. Most of Hauppage cards run off ivtv chipsets.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport">Ubuntu</a> and [L=Suse]http://en.opensuse.org/HCL[]/L] have HCLs with respect to their distros. I'm sure other distros will have some sort of hcl themselves.

If you post a list of the hardware you're running I wouldn't mind telling you what to expect through each component.

what tv tuner do you have? linux certainly works with the one i have, which is a bt848 based device manufactured by ati. just running through the linux source configuration, here are the ones that are listed:

BT848 Video For Linux
SAA6588 Radio Chip RDS decoder support on BT848 cards
CPiA Video For Linux
SAA5246A, SAA5281 Teletext processor
SAA5249 Teletext processor
SAB3036 tuner
Stradis 4:2:2 MPEG-2 video driver (EXPERIMENTAL)
Zoran ZR36057/36067 Video For Linux
Philips SAA7134 support
Siemens-Nixdorf 'Multimedia eXtension Board'
Philips-Semiconductors 'dpc7146 demonstration board'
Hexium HV-PCI6 and Orion frame grabber
Hexium Gemini frame grabber
Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) support
OmniVision Camera Chip support

Most people use Hauppauge PVR-xxx cards like the pvr-250 or pvr-150 and such. You'd have to install drivers manually for that, but they work and most distros are going to have packages aviable for them.

The ones that are common and you should avoid are tuner cards with the ATI all-in-wonder cards were you have a tv tuner + video card. Only very old versions work in Linux.
