linux and modems

In my haste sometimes I forget which of my motherboards have which features.
this has 8 usb, firewire, pata, sata but no seriel port for a linux modem.

if i were to buy an addon pci card to provide a seriel port would that work for ubuntu.

only other thing you see sometimes is an adapter from port to port like usb-seriel and I have my doubts that would work.

usb-serial devices should work just fine, I've used one at work to get console access to routers before. Hell I even just plugged my cell phone into this box here and the usbserial driver claimed it, but I didn't try it since I have nowhere to dial-up.

Their webpage says Linux support and if I had to guess, I would probably guess that it would work but I can't find anything in the Linux kernel source that mentions Syba (well the pci.ids file does, but that's irrelevant) or the chipset they say the thing uses so I would be wary.

I think (almost?) all USB-serial adapters will work. And (almost) all serial modems will work.

Furthermore, USB modems will work, if they conform to a certain specification (CDC ACM).

I like this database of what modems work, but it appears to have been dead for years, and is outdated. If you want to choose a modem from this list (either serial or USB), choose one listed with both an OK and an icon of a chip on a green background (modem fully in hardware).

This site makes the case for software modems, but I don't buy it.

Serial modems can be had for sometimes $40 retail. USB-serial adapters are about $20 retail. But that's only after a quick search.
