Linux and default printers

Is there anyways to set the default printer in linux? As to be able to use it from a GUI application from the linux box itself or by telnetting from a remote machine and using lpr.

Any help is appreciated.

Not a big deal, but it is a minor gripe.
 

by default lpr prints to the printer named 'lp', so just name the printer you want to be your default, "lp"
