LINUX: 2.4 kernel distro iso...when dernit?!

Suse's 7.1 will come out soon, I know, but how about Mandrake's 8.0? Does anyone know when a Mandrake distro with the 2.4 kernel will be released? If it's not anytime soon, I might just go with Suse7.1 whenever the iso is available.
 
redhat 7.1 (fisher) has 2.4... just get 7.0 and upgrade the kernel. that way you can select what to incorporate, too. like I dont need raid or scsi support, but the default kernel had it. unless you dont know much about your computer, compile the kernel yourself.
 
hehe....I've tried that. Me being the semi-newbie attempted twice to upgrade from Caldera's eDesktop 2.4 (2.2.14) to the 2.4.1 kernel. The first time I wasn't using updated modutils, the second time I got into some dhcp issues...... I just want to be able to pop in the CD and then tinker with some minor things (like my sound card).
My antsy-ness is because I need APM (IBM Thinkpad) and want reliable USB support for my digital camera. That way I can ditch W2K on my laptop.
I might give updating to 2.4.1 another try, but if a nice packaged iso is being released soon...why bother?
 
Because a custom configured and built kernel is faster than a pre-built. You only compile in what you need and also can compile for your processor specifically (most precompiled software is compiled with a 386 in mind just to be sure people can run it). Of course if you can't swing compiling yourself then the above fact is useless and you would be better off just waiting for a distro w/ it built-in.

2.2.18 and higher have USB integrated now, but do not support the PP or storage stuff. other than that its there
 
While compiling a new kernel is not a major undertaking (providing you read the readme), I have never gotten a clean one... It always has broken something in Mandrake 7.2... Either my Sound Card didn't work, NFS didn't work, or something errors out when rebooting... Strange... I have always done a build with Modules being rebuilt (Biggest cause for problems) but always have some kinda problem...

Just installed the Red Hat 7.1 Beta and it is sweet... I will probably just patch the kernel from now on as this should be easier than working with breaking other packages that are installed...
