[LinusTechTips] AMD Ryzen 1800X and software X264 encoding, while gaming. The BEST?

Is X264 the same as H.264? if so I hate H.264 and MKV with a passion. I have gone over some of the videos I have done using H.264 over say, the last 7 years or so and have noticed every video is blocky and has pixalated artifacts even though it was converted with highest quality settings and high bitrate in Handbrake. most of the videos that were converted when Handbrake first came out turned out pretty good and still looks good but something was changed that screwed up all my videos when converting them from about 2011 or 2012 on. Maybe its just Handbrake it self who knows? but I am now using FFmpeg via Avanti and WinFF and no longer get those issue's,well with other video formats that is. I try to stay far away from H.264. Any one else notice this?

Im actually suprised with NVENC performance on that video, it blows my RX480 encoder out of the water. Not a big shocker as i knew that already, but the difference was big there.

I think they mistake the games tested, they should have tested Witcher 3, it does a very very high CPU loading with very complex visual escenes, hardware encoders have a really HARD time with it.

Depends... Having worked in graphic design & photography for a number of years I can't unsee the compression artifacts in everything.

I've since moved to h.265, still see the artifacts, but not much to do about it...

What decoder is in question, though? Decode filtering is just as important. Bilateral-soft for image and Xbr 75-100 for double-quad luma upscaling suits me best. I still use an LCD, so I cannot say that is deficient of blur, but this is the best for type definition on streams and videos.
