Linsky Fast Ethernet

A couple of months ago I installed a Linsky Fast Ethernet on my two small business computers. Using an ISP. Both Micron computers with Windows SE. Although the system was installed properly, I had problems, and eventually had a technician come out and get the system to working. It worked well, and was fairly fast although I am way out on the end of the phone line. Then one day the newer OS crashed. The technician came back and got the system operating. This time it was very slow. Very slow. He said that we needed WinGate, and we got that. Still very slow, and while I am connected and working on line(one or both computers in use) it just forgets what its doing. Even though I have the icons showing that the system is operating, it isn't. This guy is supposed to be pretty good. (Degree in computer science - much experience) So far the service work has cost me over 500 bucks. Is this the way it is supposed to be? Except for the firewall do I need WinGate. I am building a new system, I understand that I should install ME. All comments welcome.

Are you using DSL to the Internet?

What make/model is your router/modem (to the Internet)?

How much bandwidth/speed are you supposed to get?

Is the system slow between the local computers? Either local computer to the Internet? Where is it slow?

What applications are you running (or just the slow ones)?

What kind of cable are you using (UTP/Category X, flat/round) is it in the wall, or just jumpers from machine-to-machine?

Do you have any other network devices directly attached to the (local) network (i.e., printers, fax servers, video....)?

How does the operating speed compare when you're running a local application versus when you are using a network application?

Jus' curious...
