linksys -- unsecured AP in Manhattan

Mill

Lifer
I guess they like paying for someone else to use their connection. I feel sorry for the suckers who use the 10 dollar a day hotel stuff.

it's like taking a penny from those free internet dishes... except you can do it from 50 of them...

Mine's insecure. Come over this way and share my dialup with me. 🙂

Edit: Spelling. (is unsecure a word?)

fire up the bittorent. Not because we want the speed, but so we can hijack all your bandwidth and ruin this guys internet connection.

yes, this is new york city for you. i love knowing i have the security of getting internet just about everywhere.

where are all the people who jumps in and say this is wrong or this is stealing?

imo, this is stealing, but this isn't wrong. i have 'degrees of stealing' implemented in my ethic circuit.

1: hijack their printer
2: If they are a girl, print out a sheet saying that you're aunt jemima and you wanna see some flapjacks
3: profit

Tell that to the woman i convinced to NOT get cable modem on W85th. I'm a little further south and see a ton of them. People just don't care. With cable speeds so fast, most people won't notice when all they do is check their email, order from netflix, etc.

1500/256kbps DSL from SBC is the same price as dial-up here ($19.95), unless you get one of the really crappy ISPs.

I drove around town a few days ago and picked up 63 AP's and we only drove down a few streets. We drove to Portageville, MO for a couple days this past week and I was extremely surprised to find three AP's in the middle of a soybean crop! I couldn't see any houses, pavement, people, or even farm equipment. The connections were way too weak to use (SNR's were 10-15 I think).

I can only pick up about 3-6 AP's other than my own from inside my house. Only one or two of them are unlocked and they're both too weak to connect to.

What are you guys using to secure your networks? WPA-PSK? WEP is easy too easy to break into. A couple people I know told me they broke into my network one day.

lol, indeed. I live in a relatively unpopulated part of town compared to most of the city, but there's always six or more here.
