So I just picked up a Linksys WPC54G Version 4 for my laptop yesterday because I was tired of dealing with the USB adapter I had. However, the drivers on the CD failed to load properly (XP Pro, SP3). No biggie, I figure, as I can just download updated drivers from their site and be off and running. Not so fast - as the V4 is not listed on their support site for available downloads. So I poke around a bit more an what do I spy but a live chat option. Great - the answer to my prayers, I can actually get honest to goodness tech support real time. It is only a matter of time before I have this puppy loaded and can once again cut the UTP umbilical cord and roam to my heart's content. So I start chatting with Z* at Linksys tech support, who quickly informs me that the driver that shipped on the CD is the most current (i.e. only) version for the V4 adapter. Instantly my hopes of free-range internet are dashed, as I tried the setup program and manually loading the drivers from the CD multiple times before resorting to silly things like instructions and tech support. As we delve deeper into the root cause of the failure, it seems that the problem is that I try to stay somewhat current on OS updates. In other words, their driver is not guaranteed to work with the hot off the presses SP3. Apparently a year isn't enough time for Linksys to get their act together and make sure their stuff works - unless of course it is the more expensive (and useless to me) Wireless N stuff which they tried to steer me to. So the proper resolution, at least according to Linksys, is for me to downgrade to SP2, install the adapter and get it working, then apply SP3 and hope the driver still works after that. Yeah, that is definitely less trouble than just using the no-name USB adapter that I already have that I know works.

Edit: And if someone has this adapter and managed to get it to work with SP3, please let me know.
