So its pretty much like this. I have a Linksys router with *speedbooster* technology. My current wireless adapter is getting decent connections sometimes and horrible connections 10 minutes later. I play cs:s so it can get really annoying sometimes. So, is it worth it to get a linksys adapter with speedbooster technology, or just get another adapter.

my suggestion would be to search around these forums for some good links to 3rd party firmware for that router to add more power to the antennae amplifier. you'll only get as good of a signal as your source
 
Or you could get some better antennas. Does your wireless card have a removable aerial? I know the router does.
 
Ide rather not screw around with the router's firmware, i heard its risky and could screw up everything.

Better antenna=Longer antenna?

I currently have a basic b adapter, so would switching to a g adapter help?
 
All of these special 802.11g ?Smoosters? are propriety, so if you get any None Linksys SpeedBooster card it would work as a regular 802.11g.

It is nice that ypo want to stimulate the economy😉, but you are better of trying to fix the current system.

Better positioning of Wireless Device, and or better Antenna, and or flushing the Router with 3rd party firmware and squeezing a little more ?Juice? out of it.

So, if you guys say its worthit to do the firmware then ill give it a shot

but im a newb, so should i really be getting myself into that stuff or is it fairly easily done (from a newbs point of view)
 
It's not difficult, easy actually, but there is always a small chance you will 'brick' your router. This doesn't happen randomly though, you would have to make a serious mistake somewhere, so just follow the instructions. Make sure you get the right version for your device - it's a WRT54GS right? I recommend dd-wrt for ease of use, so you would want this http://www.wrt54g.net/firmware/DD-WRT/dd-wrt.v23_wrt54gs.bin version. here is how to do it.
