Linksys Router - unable to map drive to another network!

I have a strange problem that I can't figure out and am the end of my rope. 😕

I have a cable connection (two way) that last week was working perfectly. I have since then isntalled a linksys router to allow my better half to connect her new pc so we can share the connection. Everything works great except one thing. I used to map a drive letter to a server on my work network so I could upload and download some files to. Now when I try to do the mapping it tells me network name not found. If I try the mapping in dos using the net command it gives me an error 18, network path not found. I can ping the server that the share is on (my lmhosts file has this server in it). It has to be the router because I can map if I remove the router and go back to the oringinal way it was connected or if I dialup to the internet via several isps I have access to. For some reason when connecting thru the linksys router, I cannot do this. I have tried opening different ports, using static ips instead of dhcp with the router - cannot get it to work. I have tried my laptop with the router and it does the same thing. Am running Win98 on my desktop and Win XP PRo on my laptop. Everything else works wonderfully - wife and I share the internet, printers, files etc. We both get good speed on the downloads, just cant figure why I can't map a drive! Linksys tech support has been awful as has their knowledgebase and cant find this anywhere else. Any idea are welcome and thanks!

Nothing will surprise me in Network issues, however it seems unlikely that your problem has to do with your cable/DSL Router.

What you describe is usually a result of some mistake in the network setting, mainly in the sharing setting.

Sharing the Internet is not the same as sharing Drives; the word sharing appears in both topic but that about it.

Go over all you sharing setting.

Take a look at the following links:

Thanks for the links, some good info there. I have checked and rechecked all settings. What makes me truly believe it is the router is the fact that when I go from two computers connected to this router which is then connected to the cable modem to my single computer connected to the cable modem I can map a drive letter to the share at my office server (which has the public ip address). I do this all the time also when I am on the road and connect via my laptop and use a dialup connection.

I think I may just get another brand of router which has some good support behind it, have had good support from 3com on their switches and such - will look into their cable modem routers.

Still searching....
