Linksys Router Question...

My friend and I both have a cable connection from Comcast.(We live on the same street about 4 houses away from each other)We both are using XP Pro and we are both using the 4-port Linksys Router to share the connection between our PC's. But for some reason I have to enter all of my information(IP address, DNS servers, gateway, etc)as static under the Linksys router. My friend, on the other hand, does not. His is set to automatically obtain an IP address and it works fine. We both reformatted recently and I know that all of our network settings are correct in Windows. The reason I'm asking this is because Comcast is no longer going with a static IP address. When you are handed an IP address from their DHCP server you have a lease on it for 7 days. And as lazy as this sounds, I don't want to be bothered with pinging for my new IP address every 7 days and having to enter it into the router. Am I missing somthing on the setup? Why the f**k wont this god damn thing get the IP address from my cable modem but his will?! ARRRGHH! (Been workin on this all day and I'm a tad frustrated.) Any info would help.

P.S. I have the most recent firmware for the Router as well.

Comcast doesn't care if you do it but they don't provide you with any tech support for it so HAH! Oh, BTW, don't tell your mother that you know what I'm doing isn't illegal. I pay for my internet service but I'm not about to give Comcast another eight dollars a month so I can have another IP address for a computer 2 feet away from my main one. You're wrong and I'm right. ("How does he know he's right and I'm oh so wrong?! And why am I such a stubborn dumb@$$?") Well, I'll tell ya why, Jaeger. Because their tech support people say so. Their rule is that they allow it but they do not provide tech support for it. Soooooo, if you are having trouble getting your Linksys Router working with their network they won't help you. 1-888-COMCAST. You can call that number if you want just incase you have that "Third stage in the evolution of man" mentality. Was that slow enough for you?

P.S. I got it working. I had to enter my NICs MAC address in the MAC address clone tab under the advanced settings.

how far away is your computer from the router? maybe it's too far to recieve the packets correctly, etc? try turning it down to half-duplex and 10 baseT.

Thanks for the suggestion indian but that isn't the problem. At least I can count on some people to reply with suggestions instead of stupid comments. It's clear enough to understand in it's original form jaeger. Like I said, you're just a dumb@$$.

I don't know where you guys came from but I got that they each had their own setup....not that they were trying to share.

Maybe those who comment on the composition of the original work are in fact the ones that need to brush up on their grammatical skills.

In regards to the question at hand.....I do not believe that Comcast ever oficially supported "Static" IP assignment, rather they just did not release as often or ever....

Theoretically if your system config is identical, then you should not have to enter the IP manually into the Router....

Have you tried setting up the Modem directly into that PC?? and if so what were the results??

How is your network setup??

is TCP/IP the only protocal installed or is the Peer to Peer set up on something else??

Personally I have TCP/IP setup and configured to only traffic the internet and then Netbeui sharing my local Lan behind the firewall of the hardware router.

You should check out
Practically Networked to see if there is any info that can help you there.

I stopped looking for an answer 2 days ago. I stated in my third post that I had solved the problem. I got pissed off because I hate it when people reply with stupid comments(jaeger66)instead of trying to help. Especially when the comments are directed towards you. There isn't one other person on this board who won't agree with that. He took a stab at me so I returned the favor. jaeger decided to keep it up so I just returned fire. He assumed that I was trying to steal cable and he was wrong. And we all know what happens when one assumes... Thanks for the support/information Boz and Taz but I found the answer a while ago. As for you silver, try reading the WHOLE thread and maybe you will change your position on this. I'm not the one with the chip on my shoulder.
