I have a linksys etherfast wireless access point cable router version BEFW11S4.
I have a homeconnect external cable router.
The problem is when I plug my cable modem into the WAN port of the router I cannot connect to the internet. I can access the router setup information but no internet. I've tried both a straight cable and crossed cable between the router and modem.
If I plug a straight cable into the uplink port of the router I can connect to the internet just fine.

Any ideas how to get thing setup correctly thru the WAN port?

My cable is MAC address assigned and doesn?t require and special information to access the internet.

Have you tried manually assigning an IP address to your NIC in your computer? I was having a similar problem. I read the book that came with the Linksys router (HBP200) and it said that you may have to assign an IP address to your NIC.

What I figure may be happening is that your NIC is assigned an IP address by DHCP from your ISP. When you plug it in directly to your modem, it works fine. However, when you plug in your router, the IP address assignment from your ISP doesn't go to your NIC, it goes to the router. Hence, it doesn't work!

You really have two choices. You can manually assign your NIC an IP address (whatever one you like), or you can use the DHCP server that came with your router. If your router has a DHCP server integrated, you can enable it through the setup screen (192.168.1.1) and then see if your NIC is assigned an IP address after you save the changes. If your router doesn't have a DHCP server, you must use a static IP address.

Hope this helps!

have you followed the directions for installing the router?
read the owners manual or go here - linky - and read the user manual.

the reason you connect to the internet when you plug the cable into the uplink port, is because you are bypassing the router functionality of the unit, and just connecting your computer directly to the cable modem (no firewall!!!!, no internet sharing).

connect the regular cat5 cable from the modem to the wan port
connect you computer(s) to the ports 1-4 (not the uplink port)
read the user manual and configure the router - you will need some info from your isp - get a printout of the setup page and call their
tech support - ask them for the values needed to fill in the setup page and you'll be happy!

typically you need to know - does your isp assign a IP address dynamically, or do you have a fixed ip address
if you have a fixed ip address - what is it, the subnet mask, the default gateway address, and the DNS

then enable dhcp server

I just bought a linksys wireless access point/switch(wap11) and 2 usb adapters(wusb11) for my setup. I could not get them to work unless the nic in the main computer was connected. I thought the purpose of wireless was to eliminate the wiring to the nic. I was going from cable modem to netgear router to access point. Without the nic cable connected, it would not access the internet and I couldn't see the other computer on lan. I tried ad-hoc and infrastructure and verified all settings 3 times. I'm doing some remodeling and wanted to eliminate the network cable through the house. So, after trying last night and this morning I took it all back to Best Buy. So much for wireless right now.
