Linksys Router - Next Step

OK I have had my Linksys router hooked up for a couple of months now to two computers (peer to peer) in its most basic configuration. I am trying to get my MCSE so I have a third computer on the way. I am going to set up a server-client network (perhaps a proxy and mail server just for practice). I need some tips on how to get all of this going utilizing the router (I did some searches, sorry if this has been discussed before, I'm sure it has). Any help would be appreciated. I am looking for tips, a good website, etc. Also should I upgrade my firmware? I have heard that this fixes old problems, but creates new ones.

TIA

Bypass it with a switch. If you were just thinking of maybe a little port-forwarding for gaming or maybe a little FTP site, that would be one thing. But, if you're configuring a full-blown server as part of your knowledge growth, save yourself a bunch of nightmares and headaches.
