Linksys router DHCP issue

So I've got an interesting little problem here that i really dont know what to make of. I've got a wireless network with 3 computers connected to it, and the laptop connection is constantly giving me issues.

So the problem I have is that you'll be browsing the internet on the laptop, and all of a sudden the internet will die at random. It always reconnects to the router, but it seems as if the DHCP server has an issue reassigning the default gateway and DNS server addresses and so no internet. This happens almost daily on the laptop, and maybe once a week or so on one of the desktops. Only the computers running Xp Pro seem to be affected though.

The part that has me puzzled is that you can restart the computers as much as you want, fvck with all the settings on them but you still wont get a full reconnect. Once you go reset the router without touching any settings - laptop connects instantly.

I've tried assigning a static IP to all the computers and it does work - until the router decides it doesnt want to behave anymore. Then you still get it connecting locally (IP and subnets register giving you LAN access) but no internet, even after trying a repair and reboot and all that good stuff on the computers.

Is there maybe a way to make the router automatically reset itself every 12hrs or so, or can anyone else give their $.02 cents as to what might be the problem here?

I'm stumped.

Hardware (if it matters):

Router - WRT54G w/ SVEASOFT Alchemy V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv

Laptop - winxp pro - WPC54G
Desktop #1 - winxp pro - WMP54G
Desktop #2 - xp home - WMP54G

try testing it with a different firmware, like dd-wrt or hyerwrt and see if that fixes it.

firmwareupdate.. or maybe the router is just flaking.

check the lease time and try and see if your disconnects are matching up with expiring leases.

are you getting a good signal? maybe you are dropping too many packets for the internet to connect. do a ping -t to an internet address (i use 4.2.2.2... easy to remember and type)

try and hardwire up to the router for a while and see if that fixes anything (a pain yes but it might narrow down possible issues).

this is the main reason why i dont like wireless networks that much... lots of problems and hard to troubleshoot. i hardwire my desktops, have hardwire/wireless option for laptops, and wireless for PPC at home. that way you have different ways to test it.

good luck!

i have a desktop hardwired into the router and it doesnt experience the same problems.

signal strength is excellent because the antennas have been upgraded from the stock stubs, signal strength never goes below 50% anywhere in the house.

i'll try the different firmware as well, but incase that fails is there any way to write a restart script for the sveasoft firmware, seeing as it is linux-based?
