I have installed Windows XP and I want to try the remote assistance feature with a friend. My friend has XP but he is using a linksys router to share his connection at home. I can not get to his PC. How can he disable his firewall so I can get in. Could someone please explain the steps needed to do this using the setup on the linksys setup screen.

Thanks

Try this

You need his internet IP address which i will assume you have then do the following:

START -> RUN -> CMD
Type in IPCONFIG (this will show you his internal IP number)

Once you write this number down then do the following:

Go to the Linksys setup page and select the advanced tab.
Go to the DMZ tab and type in the last digits from his internal IP#.

Hit apply then continue.
This should put his PC outside the firewall, do this when you wish to do the remote assistance.
Once you are done, have the user go back to the DMZ tab and change the number from his IP to 0.
This will put him back behind the firewall.

Try it, let me know if it works for you.

you could do this....but it defeats the purpose of a firewall for the dmz pc, instead forward port 3389 to the lan ip address of the pc you want to remote access.

I would do what Ldogg says, that way you can use Terminal Services anytime without any configuring.

You could do the forwarding, of course why would you want it on 24/7? Its a hole, I would much rather turn it on when i KNOW the person needs help, when they are right there, and when i can get them to turn it off again.
Try to forward more than just the single port as many apps use broder ranges than their standard port requests.
Forward from 3387 to 3391
