Linksys router and PPPoe

A friend of mine currently had his home LAN disconnected for some odd reason. He was upgrading from win98 to winxp home editiion, and after installing the HP printer driver, he was no longer connected to the internet. here's his setup. I am totally lost, and since he has PPPoe from verizon, I couldn't help him much. I have static so it was much easier, and im more familiar with it than with PPPoe.

5 port linksys router. Your basic wiring (one CAT5 from each PC to a port on the linksys router). LED lights are good (so he says). NICs on the two PCs are fine. He couldn't ping the router. So, I had his son change the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 (router's IP). BTW, this PC is running Win95. So, he changes that, and now he can see the router. Now, this is a PPPoe connection, so how can he set that up? I couldn't get much information from him or from his son. I confused them a little bit, but can someone tell me how to go about making this simple connection? Does the Winpoet client have to be installed locally on one of the PCs?

I know PPPoe has to be enabled in the router configuration page, and Enable on Demand is already enabled. Now he cant get to the internet. he can ping the router, but nothing on the internet works. The IP addy is set to "Obtain Automatically," and so is the DNS information. I know for static, I have to input this in manually. Thanks!

To connect the Linksys to the Verizon you need to type ID and Password to the Linksys PPPOE menu.

If your friend already has somewhere the info. Use it.

Otherwise, you have to install their software to establish account. During the process an ID and Password are generated.

When the Linksys make the connection, you can uninstall the Verizon software.

P.S. Verizon gives only dynamic IP to basic accounts.

He did that. That's already on the router configuration screen. (Hmmm...wonder if he used the password & logon to access the router
configuration instead of his Verizon account credentials).

What do you mean ID and password are generated? They only have one which I believe is their last name followed by a number.

So, from reading various articles on the internet, it seems the linksys router can replace the winpoet client. Is this true?

He reallt didnt change anything to the network. it just stopped working all of a sudden!

If the Router does the logging, you better off uninstalling WinPOET, and Netscape.

Could be that his logging was done all the time by WinPOET, and not by the Router (even if the cables go through the Router).

WinPOET is not very stable, in may be decided to quit.

The way to find out who is in charge of the connection is to pull down the Internet options menu in I.E, and look how the Connection Menu is set. WinPOET will appear as a dialup connection, while the Router is a LAN connection.
