After reading the online reviews from links on this message board it is really confusing to decide on which of these ones to buy. I am looking for a stable connection for online gaming for 2 computers over a split DSL connection and for browsing a little bit, I dont care if it can open your garage door for you or can stop the worlds best hacker. Is there anyone on this board that has any good knowledge of both of these routers and have opinions on which to buy?

>>>it is really confusing<<<

Because it does not matter, you will be OK with either.

Buy the one that is currently on sale for the least amount of money.

Just get the Linksys, it's a bit easier to setup.

Just get the Netgear, it's pretty easy to setup.

Just get the SMC, it does everything they all do, plus a printer server.

hehe, in all honestly, go with #1 and you will be fine.

netgear! :D they're products are sleek and sexy :) my 8port switch performs beautifully and i love it.

but to be honest, you can't go wrong with either choice. I would look into the smc, because it has the print server also

I would go for the Linksys. They have the best reviews of any routers. I personally will never buy netgear. I have had some major problems with thier products in the past, but i know that it is different for each person. I like linksys because it is very easy to setup and it is the cheapest of them all.

So,

Mr. Poontos, likes all of them.

Mr. Quad, has Netgear, and he likes it.

Dr. Spock, has Linksys, and he likes it.

I have SMC Barricade, and I like it.

Thank you guys in helping demonstrating my point.

WTF? I can't believe people are voting for Linksys.. Netgear is a far nicer product from what I have seen, I have owned the BEFSR41 cable router and that thing was POS.. I also had a 100mb switch of theirs which would not break transfer speeds above 2k/sec.. yes, they were both defective.. not what i call good..

I have owned Netgear stuff and for the money, It's the better of the 2, no question.

BOO to Linksys...

That is why i said it is different for every person. I have had bad experiences with netgear, but no problems with linksys. Whereas you have the opposite. It's all based as personal experience. Our recommendations are biased because of our experiences. The only real way to find out what is good or not is to try it yourself.:)

Hey, I actually have the Netgear router, I just "heard" that the Linksys is more (l)user friendly in the configuration department.

Mr. JackMDS knows what's doin'!

I have the linksys router and like it, but then again that's just me. I have a 5 port netgear switch and have found it's a solid piece of hardware. Linksys is nice, you just have to update the firmware once you get em, so they have the lastest running and work to the best of their ability...

I don't think you should judge by "looks" either. lol...

I have cable access and I just got the Linksys. I am now running the cable to my other computer, but one of them is set up already. This is how I set up my first computer:
1. Remove the ethernet cable going from the PC to the cable modem and connect the PC to the router, instead.
2. Connect another ethernet cable from the cable modem to the router.
3. Turn on PC and now I am writing this!

Hopefully when I connect my other PC, like in 10 minutes, this will go as smoothly.

I had the linksys and sold it for a netgear. Havent had any problems with the netgear, but my linksys would crash regularly, however in all fairness this was about a year ago, so firmware updates may or may not have fixed the problem.

I have seen both Linksys and Netgear work fine. I'm personally using Linksys because it was wicked cheap when I was out looking. Easier setup than netgear, but not by much. If you have any idea of what you're doing either will be easy.

The Linksys probably will need a firmware update (takes 2 minutes) and has been reported to have problems with some of its own hubs with uplinking (don't quote me on this- I'm recalling from memory).

You will be fine with either. In spite of being very happy with my BEFSR41, I would say Netgear for value right now.

I will warn you that setting up a few games on the internet with NAT is difficult/impossible. Port forwarding trouble.

I have both and am using Netgear. Liknsys's fine also but I just need to use one router (i've moved but the box containing the Linksys router arrived late so I bought a Netgear router. The store didn't have any Linksys products). I'm using the Netgear 'cause I have yet to clear the box containing the Linksys router. They both work fine. Get whatever's cheaper.
