I got cable connection to one comp, and I want to be able to use the networking kit to enable internet access to another computer.

What is the best setup? I don't have a router or anything; I've heard about using software to make two computers share one cable connection simultanesouly...

i need some ideas :)
thanks
john

When I got my cable modem I had the exact same setup as yours... Purchased the Linksys Network kit to share the connection... After you setup your network, just run NAT software like Windows ICS (included in Windows if you have win98SE or newer), or other 3rd party ones like Sygate...

so, If I have ONE nic card installed in each computer, then plug the cable modem to the uplink of the hub, and connect each computer nic to individual port of the hub and install windows ics, both computers would be able to access the cable access simultaneously?

or do i need to install TWO nics on one computer?
(one nic connected from cable modem, the other nic going to hub... then other comps connected to hub ports?)

hmm, as you can probably tell... my understanding of networking is limited :)

thanks for any info

If you just plug the cable modem into the hub (by the way, it should just go to a normal port, not the uplink), and plug your other PCs into that hub also, you will need an IP for each of the PC you have. ie 2 IPs for 2 PCs...

You will have to have 2 NICs in one of your PCs, and plug the cable modem to that PC, with the other NIC going to the hub...

what would happen if i just connected the cable connection to the hub and connected two comps from the hub? also, what does the uplink port do on the hub?

thanks

Since your ISP only provides you with 1 IP address, probably only one machine will get on at a time... so means if one got an IP, the other won't get one thus cannot access the cable modem...

The uplink port of a hub is used to connect hubs together to make a larger network... Like if you are connecting 2 hubs using a cable, it would go from a regular port of 1 hub to the uplink of the other...

cool...
so, if i have 2 nics on one comp as the ics host, and connect to the hub and have a second comp connected to the hub, both comps can use cable access simultaneously since the first comp is hosting?

hehe, this should be my last question unless other have more suggestions as to how i can setup a network :)

thanks again
john
