LinkSys Firmware upgrade = AOL starts, task bar says "A Network Cable Has Been Unplugged"... what is the deal?

Before the flames start, I only have AOL so my wife can keep her e-mail address. I have been trying to ween her from it.

Every thing was great. I have a rr.com connection, a LinkSys router, a PII-400 W2k web/ftp/mail server, and a dual booting P4-2.6 XPHome/Linux box (go Linux). I have been using AOL to check mail for my wife without issue for 5-6 months. I can run P2P apps, ftp or any other internet using app, start up AOL and not notice a break in service.
Then I get a crazy idea to upgrade the firmware on my Linksys BefSx41 router to the new v1.45.3 firmware. Upgrade improves a few things, fixes the loopback issue with my websites I host, and stabalizes my FTP servers connection. Then I notice that when I start up AOL, I get a message in my taskbar "A Network Cable Has Been Unplugged" for about 30seconds and then it dissappears. Nothing works when the bubble is there but once it goes away everything works again. I've re-installed AOL (which I'm convinced is a form of a virus), and tried about every way of 'expert' setup that it has. AOL tech support couldn't figure out the difference between a mouse and a router (I'm trying to say they don't know crap but what the flow chart tells them) and they just transfer me to LinkSys tech support.

I could use some help if you have an idea.

[EDIT] I did some investigation. It appears that when I start up AOL on my desktop machine, the router drops all connections including the connection for my webserver which does not run AOL. I swapped KVM over to the server immediately after starting AOL and I got the "A Network Cable Has Been Unplugged" message on my server. Could this be a router issue? [/EDIT]

[EDIT2] I did some more investigation. It appears than when I start up AOL, my router cold boots. ALL Network lights shut down and the "DIAG" "POWER" and "DMZ" lights are on for 30 sec, then everything returns to normal. [/EDIT2]

Can you maybe flash the router to an older firmware revision and then re-flash the router? Have you reset the router to it's default settings and left it unplugged for 10 seconds?

My Linksys router is about as pleasant to deal with as a cat in heat.

flashed old firmware (1.43.3) my router and now it works. This also solved a friend who couldn't access my web/ftp server with his BEFSR41, now he can. Linksys tech support actaully told me to use the old firmware. I'm considering not buying any more linksys products.
