Bought a router for " -$30 " last week from compusa but the netgear RT314 does not support "DMZ" - DeMilitarized Zone - basically putting one computer outside the firewall. Thats reason enough for me to go for this deal. Thanks a lot ,

ephraim..
what source do u recommend for the conclusion that the linksys is not good for gaming. i have an rt314 right now and the reason i want to switch over to linksys is for the dmz feature.
btw - if you have a game which uses random ports on the fly or a port range - there is no way to configure the rt314 to work with it.
Personally, i am having problems getting the creative voipblaster working behind the rt314.

Be carefull about making blanket statements. You can port trigger with the linksys so if you want to host a game of half life the router will use the ports you define automatically and will close them when game is finished. this and the port range forwarding make this a good deal.
it also supports IPSEC which some of you may know is needed for some types of VPN.
I'd not hesitate to recommend this to anyone as i believe their PPPoE problems have been fixed.
DMZ is a fine feature as well.

I couldn't find any advantages of the linksys over the SMC, so I got the SMC for the print server and SMC also allows DMZ and IPSEC. You can get the SMC from amazon.com for $99 and there is a $20 MIR, so if PM with staples and use a $20 off $100 coupon (because staples practically took all coupons out of the computer last night), you could get the SMC one for $59+tax after rebate.

P.S. Are coupon codes now allowed here?

I just ordered the SMC and will sell the Linksys once I get it. Everyone needs a print server.

Rat007..

Thanks for your post. Just so you know, you can't post coupon codes here at the AT Hot Deals forum. It gets our nice moderators in trouble, which we don't want.

Please edit your post to remove the Staples coupon code.... almost everyone here knows where to go to get a coupon code nowadays..

OnTopic -- I have this router and it works excellent.. just make sure to keep the firmware flash updates current.. older revisions of the firmware seem to have problems with things.. I'm running 6 computers off of it (thru a Linksys switch as well) and all work quite well..

cheers,

Is this a good router to play on the Microsoft Zone? I have heard that people have reported problems playing on the Zone due to firewall issues. Any confirmation?

Rat007..

Thanks for removing the coupon code.. you've just made some moderators day :)

Working thru Micro$oft's zone.. I didn't seem to have any troubles, but I don't have a retail copy of any the games that you can play thru the zone, so I can't answer the question fully..

cheers,

Are you guys sure that the Netgear 314 doesn't have a DMZ? From what I've read, neither of them have a true DMZ ( A computer that is only accessible from outside the firewall, not inside). However default port forwarding ( what most people mean when they say DMZ ) is available on the 314. You can specify one machine to be the recipient of any ports not specifically sent elsewhere.

Does Staples take online returns at their B&M stores?

I usually place the order online then when i get the order confirmation, email the support address with the price match details... so far works 100% for me.

Hey Rat, please eloborate on the Staples price match. What did they
charge you for shipping? If they charged you the flat rate of $5.00, this is a good deal. Otherwise, the NDA shipping charge of $20+ really puts a dent in this deal.

Well, I finally got broadband today after three YEARS of waiting for it to come into my area of chicago (earthlink DSL), and I have spent the last 6 hours trying to get ICS (the Win2K version, i.e. VERY picky about its ip's) to work with PPPOE. Will this solve my problems?

this will solve your prob. but I would go with the SMC in the other thread. Any of these routers can do the PPPoe for you.
DSLReports if you have anymore trouble setting up your DSL.

Hey, anyone actually got this Staples PM deal to work??
The Rat doesn't answer my question about the shipping charges Staples
added to his order.

Looks like Staples is out of stock. Did this get Anandtech'ed or did they realize their mistake?

Mihir - there's a fireware update for the Netgear RT314 that enables ranged port forwarding (DMZ).
