Thanks for a great deal... took me 3 operators, but the third one went out of her way to make up for the other twos lack of knowledge.

My cost was $64 and change, but I can live with the salestax.

The PM/coupon worked like a charm. Finally got a router thanks to you. I just couldn't justify $100+ when my current setup worked OK (2 NICs and Win98 Internet Connection Sharing), but at $60 I couldn't pass it up. Thanks again.

There may be more but here are a few:

1) No need for server. Any PC that is on, is on the net regardless of whether any other machines are powered up or not.

2) Firewall protection.

3) Your ISP only sees 1 IP address being used.

3) Here's an odd one. Motocross Madness 2 does not work across ICS when playing online. Only one machine on my home network can play at one time.

 
thanks for the info flenn, I had another question if you don't mind, so with Internet connection sharing through win 98 my isp will actually see 2 ip addresses? is that illegal since i am only paying for one? also, if I have 3 computers that need internet access and only want to use one ip address will this 1 port router do the job?

To answer the last question, in order to share the connection between 2-4 pc's, either get the 4-port version (BEFR41) or get a separate switch (say 4- or 5-port) to go along with the one port router (BEFR11).

if I already have the computers networked using a 10/100 base hub then I can just connect the one port router to that and it should route to 3 computers right? or do i have this all wrong?

You can get away with a hub, but switch will be much faster(in terms of bandwidth for every computer sharing the connection, there is a pricematching+rebate deal going on where you can get LinkSys 5-port switch for $15(just search for switch on this forum)

arent you forgetting something, Staples adds shipping charges for places that dont offer free shipping(like amazon or that dlink place)Unless youre matching with onvia or outpost, they shouldve added another $10 or so for shipping

AFAIK, your ISP will be able to see all computers when using ICS. Some won't care if you're exceeding what you pay for as long as the activity is reasonable. Others may try to get you to pay for additional IP addresses for each machine on the LAN. In my case, I get 2 IP addresses included in my cable service and have never drawn attention from my ISP when using my 3 networked PC's.

I've tried two times now and Staples tells me you cant price match and use a coupon on the same purchase. Anyone else run into this?

Keep trying. I was lucky enough to get it on the first try but have had to use the "multiple CSRs method" on other PMs. Also, don't mention the coupon until they verify the PM and start the order. Tell them that the coupon was sent to you in the mail if they ask.

Try acting dump like me.

Ask if they PM
See if they are smart enough to add shipping.
Once they start taking your order, but before they finish
Say that you have a coupon mail to you that you would like to use.

This has worked for me almost everytime.

Sucks that I had to pay shipping for the second one that I purchase, but didn't really felt like getting another csr. Great price for such a simple and power router. 71 after tax and shipping.....Kind of saw that it took 2 week to ship from Amazon, but don't think they pay attention to the on order status.

Got to love this thing, up and running in less than 15 minutes.

D-Link DI-701 Router

-Both are 1-port
-The D-Link has a DB-9 port.
-The Linksys supports 254 clients, the D-Link supports 128 (if you're have that many client computers and are sharing a cable/dsl connection, I'm sorry)
-W/ the D-Link, you can route specific services to specific machines on your network. I don't believe the Linksys info page has any info on this type of feature so I'd assume the Linksys, correct me if i'm wrong.
-The Linksys has web-based configuration, the D-Link windows-based and Telnet (telnet is cooler of course)

I have the D-Link and I love it, though by the specs it seems it's a toss-up. If you need the ability to route services I'd go w/ the D-Link (unless someone can confirm that the Linksys can do this too)

 
oh boy, please try not to get sucked into lynksys with this. my friend had the 1-port router and the 4-port switch (2 boxes). the router died... 3 days later, the switch died. customer service is non-existent. unfortunately each time he called he got "we are sorry, but we are unable to take your call at this time. please call again" -click...

he had this go on for two weeks. never got through. rma'ed the router at least.

he and I are using smc barricades now. I got it for 160, he paid 180. more expensive (sorry), but it works great. similar html interface, but much more reliable.:disgust:
 
Well, I've heard a lot of good thing about the Linksys too. I think the reason there are a few horror stories is simply the number of units in the field. They were one of the first to offer affordable routers for home/soho/small business application so the odds are you're going to find some negative comments with so many in use.

Bottom line is that for $63 shipped, I'll allow myself to get "sucked in". Hehe.
