Anyone know where/how I can update the firmware on my cable modem (Model BEFCMU10 ver. 2). Apparently the cable company has pushed down some updates that sets the bandwidth cap on the modem and I'd like to change this. the Linksys site does not offer the firmware for download, but I know it must exist.

Thanks.

It might, but it'll break your terms of service to try to do it, and might make your modem stop working. I don't think the mods appreciate this type of attempting to bypass rules, but maybe they're not quite that anal.

Oh, nevermind. I suspected this may be "questionable" but I didn't know it would be illegal.
I just want to get the most out of my connection...

Sorry Mods! My Bad :D

I'm not sure it's "illegal", but definitely against the rules of your ISP. You COULD be prosecuted for stealing bandwidth but the media storm that would generate would probably lose the cable company more money than you're worth. :)

I believe there were some people prosecuted for doing this once before, but I think it was on a major scale or something. Enough to make it not worth risking, and really if you don't like the service, change providers so the cable company learns that people hate it when they screw the customer. :)

Oh, I'm not at all unhappy with the service. In fact quite the contrary! I rarely experience dropouts and I typically connect at around 3-5Mbps. It's just that a friend of mine was telling me how he did this to his cable modem and watched his connection speed jump dramatically. He claimed 4-5 MB/sec sustained download speeds vs. the 2-300KB/sec I usually get. So you know, monkey see (or hear in this case)... Could be the guy is full of sh*t too. But I figured it would be something entertaining to research in my infinate boredom.

JR..

Note: Right now I'm tracking about 900kbps according to bandwithplace.com, but I have seen it consistantly higher.

As Evermore kindly stated, do not risk uncapping your modem. Most likely your friend is BS'ing you anyhow. ;)

900 kpbs equates to roughly 100 KB/sec downstream. A 5Mbps connection would yield rougly 560 KB/sec. It's typical to allow a 10% overhead when factoring estimated download & upload speeds while dividing the ISP's stated/measured line speed by 8.

Bandwidthplace.com telle me that I have the following line speed to their server:

Your raw speed was 3777560.98 bits per second which is the same as:
3.8 megabits per second
461.1 kilobytes per second

broadbandreports.com shows 3119/255
