Ok, here is what you need to do: I just did this 10 minutes ago, and it works in the store. DONT do this online!

First -

Print Out This Price for the modem $104 - W/ Free Shipping

Next, Print out this coupon $20 off $100 (this is posted on staples site)

goto your local staples store (this cannot be done online). Call before you go to see if its in stock.

Get to the store, and pricematch with the buy.com $104 price + free shipping.

Then add on the $20 off $100 code , you should now be at around $90 out the door. Ask for a duplicate Receipt (for the rebate )

Ok, important, DONT MENTION THE REBATE TO THE MANAGER OR SALES LADY... Im sure this doesnt really matter, but dont give them another reason to be macho in front of the peons working at staples.

Next, Print out the $30 rebate valid till december 15th.

Modem total is now $60 after rebate.

Next, order comcast @home with the quickstart kit and print out the $100 winter rebate.

When all is said and done, you get your linksys modem for Free, and make $40!!

I did the modem deal today at the cherry hill nj staples, with some older female manager. She didnt blink.

Just as an FYI, I had a bad experience with Linksys cable modems. The modem was unable to stay connected for more than a second or 2. The cable co did all sorts of tests on thier end, and even increased the signal to my node, but to no avail. When I took the modem back to staples, the girl at the refund desk said " Yeah, we get a lot of these back". I got a motorola and am very satisfied.

BTW, I am not anti-Linksys ( 5 nic's, 2 5 port switches, and a 4 port router) , and I wanted to keep my home network all linksys, which is why I bought thier cable modem in the firstplace .

If you prefer to do it online which I did you can use the Coupon 71204 and get $20 off purchases of $100+.
With free shipping and no taxes it is a pretty nice deal never the less.

Amazon.com also has a good deal on this at only $104.95 without a coupon. With the Linksys Rebate you save a whole .04 over the Staples deal of that matter. Of course Amazon.com may charge you tax and shipping on it. Might be a good combo with other coupons at Amazon though.

I haven't read any messages saying it didn't work on @home. The one message I read somewhere where it didn't work on Comcast @home was by some guy who said comcast refused to even try to get it to work just because it wasn't on their "list".

I might try this modem myself. I'll just have to return it if it doesn't work.

I'm no expert, but DOCSIS is supposed to be a standard I think, and there really should be no reason why it shouldn't work unless the ISP isn't following a standard. Personally I think a lot of these ISP's just want to sell you one of theirs.

Have a question here about cable modem.

This Linksys modem is just like Toshiba, has connections for USB and ethernet. And I think you can use both ports for 2 computers simultaneously. Would this create IP conflict if I have only one IP from cable company. I know cable/DSL router will be able to connect more computers and present as just one IP to cable company, thus no problem w/ just one IP from cable company. Since I need only connect 2 computers, so was thinking if I do need a router. Anyone please shed the light on this, thanks.

PM6163 I'm not sure msyelf, although it sounds like it wouldn't work using both connections on the modem, but I really don't know.

Just as an update for anyone who cares, I received this modem today and have it working. I have Charter Pipeline for my ISP (as of last week it was Charter @home). I had to call in to tech support to give them the mac address of the modem so they could provision it on their end. She said the modem should work fine as long as its a Docsis compatible modem.

After they provisioned the line for me, they said it should be ready. However the light kept blinking for the cable connection, which mean't I didn't have a connection. I fixed it by reseting the modem using a paper clip. Then rebooted again. So far its working very well.

Where do I get the comcast quick start kit? Is it something I purchase from Staples? Or do I have to call comcast and order a quickstart kit? What exactly is the quick start kit? Thanks for your help. I'm heading to staples tonight!

edit
Also, what is the winter rebate for? I mean, is it for the linksys modem and quickstart kit combined? Do i need to submit UPC codes from the box of the quickstart kit and Modem? And submit receipts for the quickstart kit and modem? I couldn't find the details on this. Thanks again for your help!

Wow! I went to my staples about 5 mins away... NONE! All they had was a defective unit... Probably some idiot that thought... Well, all I need to do is unplug my modem... And plug this one in.... Hmmm, it's not working... I wonder why...

LINKY Go here this modem is on the list....

So, I went to my other staples about 20 Mins away... Had ONE left! But, I got it up to the register and the lady ask's me. You'r not going to use this for AT&T are you?
I thought to my self "No, I'm going to ship it to my retarded brother in china so he can use it!!!" DUH!!! So, stupid me says..."Yeah..." And she says... These modem don't work with AT&T... You should try your luck at CC... So, I looked at the list. Hoping that she was wrong and the people who brought back their modems were idiot's that didn't even bother to get a new MAC address... Funny in the very WEAK instruction booklet that comes with this mentions nothing about calling your cable provider...

Anyway... I pluged it in and of course it's not working yet. About to make the call to AT&T tomorrow. If I can get it working I'll post more later. I'm going to wait to mail in the 30 rebate ... Make sure I can return the modem if I can't get it to work. Better then paying Amazon Shipping charges back to them...

And on a happy note I got the modem for 79.95!!! Thanks for posting this... Worked great. I took it up there and she is all... 129.95... PM Amazon... 104.95... Then I give her the coupon... 79.95!!! Got the rebate all ready to be shipped out... 49.95 is a flamming hot deal.

Just read in the other thread that you have to bring in your AT&T modem to them with your modem before they change the MAC address... What a bunch of S$!T I hope that is not the case with me...

In-Brian says: I hope this will resolve your issue.
You say: Well, that might be my MAC address of my NIC card in my PC. I am talking about the MAC address on the CABLE Modems themselves... Knowing the Mac Address of my Internal NIC Is not going to do me any good.

In-Brian says: I MAC address of the cable modem is at the back side of your cable modem.

Ok, first off, I'm in the sacramento area. I first went to the Staples on Truxel in Natomas and they had a couple modems. But when I took it to the register to price match, they said they don't pricematch online retailers. BS....so I walked out the door. Next I went to the Staples on Howe Avenue near Alta Arden and they don't carry cablemodems.....but they do pricematch online competitors. Doh! Next, I called Staples.com to try and purchase with pricematch but they were out of stock and Robin told me that the Staples in West Sacramento on Harbor had a 2 in stock. I then called that Staples and verified that they PM online competitors and she confirmed it! Woohoo! I went straight over there, they had 2 modems on the shelf, I picked one up and took it to the register. She PM'd it and took the coupon no prob. Paid $90.90 out the door.

I then call Comcast to get the QuickStart Kit but they said they no longer have the quickstart kits and are no longer sending them out. Marty said it was part of @home's deal. Since they changed hands(he said), no more quick start kits. Anyway, does that mean I don't get the winter rebate?

hehe... what a run around!
Hey, glad to see that you finally got one in Sacto...(I picked mine up at the Sunrise Blvd location)

FYI, when I got to store yesterday the CSR said they don't carry cable modems? So I asked him to check their computer system.. to his surprise they did indeed carry cable modems.. He went to back room and came out with a fresh box.

Hey let me know if you find out anything more about this winter rebate !

Essentially any modem that is DOCSIS 1.0 compliant will work with AT&T Broadband/ATTBI. I have my Linksys from this deal up and running fantastically right now. I used to lease the 3Com (Also known as the Sharkfin) and I love the look of this Linksys with the stand going vertical. Essentially all that was necessary was to hook up the modem, do a nice 15 second reset, go to https://sas.r1.atbi.com. Put in the subscriber number. Put in the last nine digits for the password and it adds it to their mac list for port security. Tada. I could not find it documented anywhere but jumping to the modems private (RFC 1918) address @ http://192.168.100.1 gives a nice information wizard much like every other modem out there which is becoming somewhat of a de facto standard. I receive critical errors on not receiving ranging responses but works great regardless. Not so much of a criticial error to me. :) Have fun!

BTW quit it with the "get a new MAC address" talk. You don't "get" a MAC address on remote devices such as these unless you are using DECNet or some other archaic system that changes your MAC from your bia. Sure you can clone. Sure you can assign different MACs on the ports for devices that have a large port density such as a switch or router from Cisco. Devices like these with one interface and NICs utilize the bia from ROM. You simply just inform your ISP of its' MAC address.

For others that might be having the same problem with the modem that got this deal as well.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I was wondering how you discovered this http: address? I tried it on my Linksys modem and it didn?t do anything? it just timed out. I am behind a router, so maybe that?s why?

Other cable modems provide this feature so I figured I would give a shot and it worked. Linksys's documentation on this device is horrible right now (I suppose because it is such a new product). The reason you cannot reach that IP is possibly based on how your router is NAT'ing to the WAN interface. I can reach it through my Linksys BEFSR81 fine. I noticed a couple times the cable modem was not available via http. You might want to try resetting the modem or plugging directly to it from a NIC. After a reset has occurred it takes a bit for the webserver engine to load. This occurs before the full POST and initialization of the device though. This can be useful for looking at the log file as the device syncs with your ISP's switch. No real beneficial features can be seen from it besides that. Just something to look at such as CPE information, frequency range utilized, bandwidth, etc. :)

Ok..I was FINALLY able to get my modem up and running today!!!!! I've been waiting since I bought that damn thing(dec. 10th) to have att hook it up!! What a bunch of MORONS!!! The story is sooooooooooo long, I'm not even gunna waste yer time. Basically the guys that came to hook up my modem, just plugged it in and said, "uh, the modem doesn't work with att". They never even called in the MAC address...Geezus. I've been calling almost daily since the 10th to get this thing running, and finally, I got a hold of someone that new how to do this! It took over 2 weeks!! This guy did it over the phone with me in less than 5 minutes. Anyway, it works! According to dslreports.com bandwidth tests, it reads between 2 and 3 mb down and almost 500k up! With their RCA modem i was getting around 1 mb down and 100k up. Not a bad improvement!
