Linksys BEFW11S4/WRT54G Drops Connection When Streaming Media

Hi there, I am looking for some advice on my routers. I had a BEFW11S4 Linksys router, with Verizon DSL. The settings are set to PPOE, and everything seems to be working fine. It is wireless, but for the time being I am not using any wireless devices.

There are 4 devices connected to the router, and all work. From time to time, when I stream media it seems like the router just chokes and kills over. It will not work until I unplug the router.

Recently I upgraded to the WRT54G version and the same exact thing. At first I thought that it was my Verizon connection so I put it to the test. I plugged the DSL modem directly to my computer. I can stream anything and everything without failing once. But sure enough as soon as the router is back on, drop out after drop out. To say the least it is very annoying. It is near impossible because I like to use my XBOX or PS2 online while my brother will stream music in the next room. After a few minutes DEAD connection...

I have tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to work. I am not sure, but I think that the WRT54G may not be working, it does not seem to want to connect to anything now..... So for the time being, I am back to using the BEFW11S4.

.....I am trying to think about anything else that may help you help me, and all I can think is that the firmware has not been upgraded in the BEFW11S4 (if its possible) but has been in my WRT54G.... But keep in mind the WRT54G is not working anyway so lets work on the other one.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Would it be worth my while to try a different brand?? I don't really want too because other than this problem Linksys has been a great product for me....That and the fact I am poor.... A guys gotta eat!

Thanks for your help and suggestions in advance....

It does have an MTU setting, however, I can't see a way to change it, let me do some research on how to access it.

Just upgraded Firmware, and is still doing the same thing.

**EDIT** It does have MTU settings, and I can change them...any advice on what it should be set too?

It is currently set at 1492, I will try 1362.

**EDIT**....I was not paying attention, even though it was set to 1492, it was disabled...So it was not doing anytihng. I enabled it, and tried both settings...The router is still choking like my girlfriend on prom night.....

Any other thoughts??

Well, thats a bummer. This is probably a longshot, but is there any conflict between PPPOE on the router and some PPPOE settings/programs on the computer(s)?

Hmm, well with my one computer it kept wanting to connect to the net by using the connect dialog box....the one with the insert user name and password thing....but thats only because I forgot to delete the "connect to" thing. But thats done so still nothing.

I know it does this (disconnects) with IE, I am going to try firefox and see hows it fares. I am guessing the same thing will happen.
